Introduction

General Electric (GE), one of the largest companies in the world, had a presence in businesses ranging from jet engines to TV broadcasting and from plastics to power plants. The company produced aircraft engines, locomotives and other transportation equipment, appliances (kitchen and laundry equipment), lighting, electric distribution and control equipment, generators and turbines, nuclear reactors, medical imaging equipment, and plastics. Its financial arm, which included commercial finance, consumer finance, equipment management, and insurance businesses, accounted for nearly half of the company's sales.

GE also owned the NBC television network. In 2004, GE recorded global sales of $152 billion and a net income of $ 16 billion. India had become an important part of GE's worldwide operations in recent times. As 2005 got under way, GE was reviewing various options for strengthening and consolidating its presence in the country.

Background Note

GE had entered India in 1902, when it installed a hydro plant. In 1930, it set up International General Electric (IGE) as a sales and distribution arm. But it was in the 1980s, that GE began to look seriously at the country as a possible market for its high value products like turbines and aircraft engines...
